Tiffany’s 8th Great-Grandfather, Corporal Joseph E. Herrick, Esq., was Constable of Salem Village, MA in 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials. In this role, he was unfortunately the person ordered by the local magistrate on February 29, 1692 to apprehend the first three accused witches for examination. Later realizing the enormity of the witchcraft scandals, and how the trials were based on false town hearsay and fanaticism, he signed a petition of defense on behalf of one of the accused, which laid him open to the chance of similar persecution.
